More Info

With low mintages in the two preceding years, 1920 and 1921, the 1922 St Gauden double eagle coin was, in comparison, widely available. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, 1,375,500 coins were produced. with over 84000 surviving pieces being submitted for grading in recent years.

The inception of the Double Gold Eagle Coin is thanks to President Theodore Roosevelt. Claiming that the American Coinage of the era was too unattractive, renowned scultor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was employed as the first person outside of the American mint to produce designs for future coinage, including the $20 gold piece that would become known as the double eagle.

Slabbed Coins

We have written about the nature of slabbed coins, and we would urge consumers to do their research when looking to purchase such coins.

Obverse

The reverse design of the 1922 Gold Double Eagle was again engraved by St Gauden, at the time the only person to design an American coin that did not work at the mint. St Gauden's design is credited for bringing life to Lady Liberty, with a raised torch in her right hand and holding an olive branch in an extended left hand, the national icon is represented as a fearless, unwaivering symbol of the USA; with the capitol building also being shown in the foreground.

Reverse

Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the 1922 Double Eagle gold coin is also commonly referred to as the St Gaudens double eagle, in homage to the American gold coins engraver. The obverse of the coin shows an Eagle in flight, backed by rays from the sun, all above the incription:

"In God We Trust"
