Perth Mint

The Perth Mint in Australia started production of sovereigns in 1899 and minted 2,298,000 gold sovereigns for 1922. These coins are the most common mint mark for this year. The Sydney and Melbourne mintmarks are scarce, with only 578,000 minted in Sydney and 608,000 minted in Melbourne.

History of George V Gold Sovereigns Coins

George V Sovereigns were first issued in 1911 and were in circulation when WWI broke out in 1914, meaning they are often referred to as WWI Gold Sovereign coins. These coins were the last British gold coins in circulation, until 1932, when Britain left the gold standard. They are the only coins to have been manufactured at all six branches of the Royal Mint.

Capital Gains Tax

As British legal tender the gold sovereign is exempt from Capital Gains Tax, potentially offering a significant tax saving when you come to sell.

Obverse

The 1922 Perth Mint sovereign features the "large head" George V facing left. The portrait designer of the obverse side of the coin was Edgar Bertram Mackennal an Australian sculptor and medallist, most famous for designing the coinage and stamps of George V. The legend which surrounds the king’s portrait reads:

GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:

Reverse

The reverse of the 1922 Perth Mint sovereign features St George mounted on a horse slaying the dragon with his sword. This classic design is the work of Italian sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci and first featured on the gold sovereign in 1817. The date appears below the exergue line at the bottom, with the letters B.P. to the right.
