Since 1871, British sovereigns were struck at branch mints, in addition to the Royal Mint in London. The Perth, Australia mint started production of sovereigns in 1899. The Mintmarks are to be found on the ground above the centre of the date and the Perth mintmark is denoted by the letter P.
Although George V aceeded to the throne on May 6th 1910, on the death of his father Edward VII, all British coins dated 1910 continued to use Edward's portrait, and 1911 was the first year in which coins were issued with George's portrait. 1911 was also his coronation year.We keep 1911 sovereigns in stock for immediate delivery. We try to maintain a stock of all dates of gold sovereigns, including 1911. Fortunately, 1911 was a plentiful year for sovereigns, and this is reflected in the reasonable prices and excellent grades we can offer.
1911 was the first year in which coins were issued with George's portrait, designed by Bertram Mackennal, an Australian born in Melbourne 1863. There are two types of George V sovereign and between the years 1911-1928 the sovereigns feature the large size portrait.
The Reverse of this 1911 gold sovereign features the beautiful St George and dragon design created by Benedetto Pistrucci. St George is on horse back slaying a dragon and is one of the most popular coin designs in the world.
