This is a 1911 United States Gold Double Eagle $20 Dollar Coin.
The coins were struck at the San Francisco branch of the US Mint, and so have an "S" mintmark. They have a fineness of 0.900 or 21.6 carat.
These popular coins are referred to as "St. Gaudens" eagles, after their designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
These double eagle coins contain just under 1 troy ounce of gold.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
The USA is a relatively young country, and its first regular issue of gold coins started in 1795. Although most of them have an eagle as a major part of their design, for some reason the $10 piece acquired the name eagle, and the other sizes as double eagles, half eagles, and quarter eagles. The ten dollar gold pieces are therefore known as eagles or gold eagles.
Be careful not to confuse them with the modern gold bullion eagles issued since 1986 - both are called eagles!
US double eagles featuring the Saint Gaudens design were minted at the Denver (D mintmark), Philadelphia (no mintmark) and San Francisco (S mintmark) branches of the US Mint.
The obverse was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and shows Lady Liberty holding an olive branch and a torch. The inscription reads:
LIBERTY 1911
The reverse was also designed by the engraver Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It shows an eagle with rays of sunshine in the background. The inscription reads:
UNITED·STATES·OF·AMERICA
