1909 8 Gold $20 Double Eagle Coin Saint Gaudens Philadelphia Mint Overdate NGC MS-62

This 1909/8 Gold $20 Double Eagle Saint Gaudens Coin was struck at the Philadelphia branch of the US Mint.

This is a 1909 over 1908 overdate coin. Overdates happen when the die had been recut or re-punched to alter the date.

These coins are often referred to as "St. Gaudens" eagles, after their designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Unlike other US branch mints, coins struck at the Philadelphia mint do not contain a mintmark.

The coins are struck from .900 fine gold (21.6 carat) and contain 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal.

Overdate Coins

An overdate on a coin is where a die has been recut or re-punched to alter the date. This may have been done for economic reasons, to avoid discarding a perfectly good die at the beginning of a new year, because of a lack of new dies, or to correct an error.

Double Eagles

The USA began regularly issuing gold coins in 1795. Although most of the coins feature an eagle as a major part of their design, the $10 piece acquired the name "eagle", with other denominations being named "double eagles", "half eagles", and "quarter eagles".

These eagle coins are not to be confused with the modern gold bullion eagles which have been issued since 1986.

Saint Gaudens Mintmarks

US double eagles featuring the Saint Gaudens design were minted at the Denver (D mintmark), Philadelphia (no mintmark) and San Francisco (S mintmark) branches of the US Mint.

Motto

This coin has the motto on the reverse below the eagle. There is a variety of the 1909 Philadelphia Saint Gaudens double eagles, without the motto 'In God We Trust', which is rarer than the 'No Motto'

Obverse

Designed by American sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the obverse features Lady Liberty holding an olive branch and a torch. The inscription reads:

LIBERTY 1909 [9/8 overdate]

Reverse

The reverse was also designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It shows an eagle with rays of sunshine in the background. The inscription reads:

UNITED·STATES·OF·AMERICA
TWENTY·DOLLARS
