Edward VII Florins with Standing Britannia Design
Both the obverse and reverse are by engraver George William De Saulles, who was Chief Engraver from 1892 to his death in 1903. His Standing Britannia design for the Edward VII florins is considered by many to be amongst the most attractive designs on British coins.
On mint condition, or high grade coins it does look good; one slight detraction is the fact that the date numerals were quite small and place were they were subject to wear, with the result that on many lower grade Edward florins, the date is illegible.
The edge is milled
Portrait of King Edward VII with the engraver's initials "De S." in raised letters below the truncation of the neck.
The obverse inscription reads:
EDWARDUS VII D: G: BRITT: OMN: REX: REX F:D: IND: IMP:
A standing figure of Britannia, with trident, shield, helmet, and long flowing tunic, with its cape blowing in the breeze. For some reason, it had never dawned on us that she is also shown standing on the bow of a ship, with its prow to the right. The sea can be clearly seen behind her.
The reverse legend reads:
