1899 Gold Sovereign Victoria Old Head Melbourne

This 1899 sovereign was produced at the Melbourne mint in Australia. The coin features the St George and the Dragon reverse, as well as the Thomas Brock 'veiled head' portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse.

The Melbourne, Sydney and Perth mints in Australia, as well as the Royal Mint in London, all produced sovereigns in 1899.

Obverse

Thomas Brock designed the veiled head portrait of Queen Victoria. It was used on coinage from 1887 until 1901, and is often referred to as the widow head or old head portrait.

Reverse

The reverse of this 1899 British sovereign features St George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci. The mint mark "M" can be seen below the slayed dragon.
