Victoria Old Head Portrait

This portrait by Thomas Brock is known as the Old Head, the Veiled Head or the Widow Head.

Obverse

Thomas Brock designed the old head portrait of Queen Victoria. It appeared on coins from 1887 until 1901.

Reverse

The coin features the St George and the Dragon design on the reverse. This is one of two main reverse sovereign designs seen during Victoria's reign, the other being the shield reverse. The St George and the Dragon reverse was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci and first appeared on the coins in 1817.

There is a lack of any mint mark in the ground under St George, denoting that the coin was minted in London.
