The 1897 Victoria Diamond Jubilee Large Gold Medallion was issued by The Royal Mint in several versions, including different sizes and metals, by Sir Thomas Brock, and was announced as 'The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, the official medal'.
These small medallions are issued loose, commemorating Queen Victoria becoming the first British monarch to celebrate 60 years on the throne.
Please Note: This medallion comes in its original box, we also sell for the 1897 gold Victoria small medallion with box.

Queen Victoria had presided over some of the greatest social and technological change of any monarch in British History, with the possible exception of our present Queen, Elizabeth II.
During her lifetime, the railway had replaced the horse and cart as the main means of transportation on land. At sea, the age of sail had given way to the age of machine propulsion. The British economy had also been transformed from a largely rural economy into a largely urban and industrial one.
The complete 1897 Victoria diamond jubilee medallion set issued by The Royal Mint consisted of 5 medallions of 3 different metals and different sizes.
The medallions all originally came in a small box with the Royal Crown in the middle of it and the dates '1837-1887' underneath it.
The obverse features the veiled bust of Queen Victoria, more commonly as the 'Old Head', designed by Sir Thomas Brock . With the inscription of:
VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN•MDCCCXCVII
Translating roughly to:
VICTORIA HAPPILY CONCLUDED THE 60TH YEAR OF HER REIGN JUNE 20 •1897
The reverse features the young head portrait of Queen Victoria, designed by William Wyons. With the inscription of Proverbs 3:16 :
LONGITVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS ET IN SINISTRA GLORIA
Translating roughly to:
LENGTH OF DAYS IN HER RIGHT HAND AND IN HER LEFT HAND RICHES AND GLORY
