Struck in 22 carat gold, 2,808,000 1890 Jubilee Head sovereigns were minted at the Sydney branch mint in Australia.
The Royal Mint in London and the Australian branch mint in Melbourne also issued 1890 sovereigns. A total of 11,811,424 sovereigns were struck by the three mints in this year.
The Jubilee Head obverse was introduced in 1887 in order to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The portrait with the small crown perched upon the Queen's head was designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm. His initials J.E.B. are in relief in the truncation. The coin bears the inscription VICTORIA D:G: BRITT:REG:F:D:, on this coin the D:G: is set closer to the crown.
All Jubilee Head sovereigns feature the St George and the Dragon design, which was originally engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817. The S mint mark in the ground below the dragon shows that this British circuation coin was produced in Sydney, Australia. The date and initials B.P. are in exergue.
