Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee

Queen Victoria ascended to the throne age 18 on the 20th of June 1837, following the death of her Uncle King William IV. She was coronated at Westminster Abbey on the 28th of June 1837, where it was watched by several hundred thousand.

She celebrated her Golden Jubilee on 20th June 1887 with a service at Westminster Abbey and a large banquet with Kings from all over the globe.

To mark this magnificent achievement a new portrait was designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm which would be used to replace the ‘Young Head Portrait’ engraved by William Wyons. This portrait was used from 1887 to 1893 on gold and silver coins during this period.
