These 1887 Gold Quintuple Victoria Jubilee Sovereign NGC Coins were issued by the Royal Mint and has a limited mintage of just 54,000.
It is rare that we come across genuine 1887 gold £5's, most of the examples we see are modern reproductions. This coin has been authenticated by NGC and given the grade of uncirculated, with details and cleaned.
The portrait that appears on the obverse is the Victoria jubilee portrait that was used in 1887-93, and was designed by Austrian born sculptor Sir Joesph Edgar Boehm.
It weighs (1.1771 troy ounces) of 22 carat gold, and struck in 0.917 fineness.
Slabbed by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as a UNC DETAILS CLEANED.
See our 1887 Sovereign Collection
Coins that are slabbed by the NGC as UNC DETAILS means that the coin is uncirculated but has issues that prevent it from receiving a numerical grade. Some examples why coins may not receive a numerical grade is they could be cleaned, tooled, damaged or suffer from other various problems.
The obverse side of the coin features the Jubilee portrait of Victoria that was sculpted by Sir Joesph Edgar Boehm and bears an inscription that reads as:
VICTORIA D:G: BRITT:REG:F:D:
Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the dragon appears on the reverse with the date 1887 appearing at the bottom of the reverse.
