This 1885 gold sovereign coin features the famous young head portrai of Queen Victoria across the obverse, with the crowned shield design being shown on the reverse. Minted at both Melbourne and Sydney, the gold sovereign's issued from Melbourne can be of a distinctly rare mintage.

The obverse of the 1885 gold sovereign reveals William Wyon's famous "young head" portrait of Queen Victoria. Below the regal depiction appears the year the coin was issued.
The reverse of the 1885 young head Victoria sovereign coin features another namesake for the piece; earning it the "shield back" title, the reverse exhibits a crowned shield surrounded by a wreath, with the "M" mintmark appearing at the bottom.
