This 1884 sovereign was issued by the Melbourne Mint Australia, this is shown by the letter "M" below the bust of Queen Victoria.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
In 1884, the London, Sydney and Melbourne Mints issued St. George and the dragon design sovereigns. Victoria Young Head Sovereigns were issued for Queen Victoria in almost every year from 1837 to 1887. There were three main obverse (head) designs, and two reverse designs. The St. George reverse was minted with the young head obverse from 1871-1887. For this date there is also a Young Head Shield Sovereign, however, they were only minted by the Sydney and Melbourne mints.
The obverse of the coin features the design by William Wyon of a young head Victoria with the letter "M" below the bust.
The Reverse of this gold sovereign features Benedetto Pistrucci's image of St. George slaying the dragon. His initials BP appear, in small, to the right of the date.
