Shield sovereigns were minted at the Melbourne and Sydney Mints in 1884, and none were issued by the London Mint.

In 1872, the shield reverse sovereign was issued by The Royal Mint in London and the Australian branch mints in Melbourne and Sydney. The St George and Dragon sovereign was also issued in 1872. These circulation coins are struck in 22 carat gold and have a nominal value of one pound.

Obverse

The obverse depicts a young head portrait of Queen Victoria designed by William Wyon and the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA with the year date. The engraver's initials are in the truncation.

Reverse

The reverse bears the shield design. The die number can be seen below the wreath. The coin features the inscription BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID:DEF.

VAT:
Investment gold products are VAT-free, while silver products include VAT.
Cancellations & Returns:
Once you place an order, you cannot cancel it. We do not currently accept returns, however. You may be able to sell your investment products back to Chards at the current buy back rate.
