King Umberto I reigned as the King of Italy from 9 January 1878 until his death by assassination on 29 July 1900. The king descended from one of the oldest royal families in the world, the House of Savoy.
Italy issued 20 lire gold coins from 1861 to 1927. These coins are known as marenghi, the singular of which is marengo.
This is sold as a bullion coin at a low premium above the gold spot price, the finish is uncirculated - this is not the grade. We sell graded Italian 20 Lire in a variety of years in different grades. Please contact us on 01253 343081 for details.
The obverse bears a left facing portrait of King Umberto I by Filippo Speranza, chief engraver at the Roman mint. The engraver's name is in the truncated neck. The coin bears the inscription UMBERTO I RE D'ITALIA.
Designed by Filippo Speranza, the reverse bears the crowned Savoy shield of arms decorated with the Collare dell'Annunziata (Collar of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunziata, the highest honour in the House of Savoia). This is encompassed by a wreath of a branch of laurel to the left and oak to the right. The value is split on either side of the shield, L for Lire and 20. The design is topped by the Star of Italy. The R mint mark for the Roman mint is below the wreath to the left.

All investment products are based on the live precious metal price. Prices will be fixed once the item has been added to the basket and recalculates just before checking out.
If your product is not a graded coin and is considered a bullion item it should be noted that these are bought and sold on low premiums over their precious metal content and not solely for aesthetic purposes, therefore some products may have edge knocks and/or marks. These edge knocks and marks do not alter the specifications of the coins.

If customers no longer wish to go ahead with their investment purchase, there is an option to sell the products back to Chard (1964) Ltd instead. You can view our current buy back prices here.
