This St George reverse sovereign was minted by the Melbourne mint in Australia. The Melbourne Mint was an overseas branch mint of The Royal Mint. This branch mint produced sovereigns until 1931. These British gold coins were issued for circulation as one pound coins and are popular with coin collectors today.

Sovereigns were issued for Queen Victoria in almost every year from 1838 to 1901. During the reign of Queen Victoria, there were three main obverse designs (the Young Head, the Jubilee Head and the Old Head portraits) and two main reverse designs (the shield and the St George and the Dragon).
