1876 Gold $20 Double Eagle Coin Coronet Head San Francisco Mint

This is an 1876 United States Gold Double Eagle $20 Dollar Coin.

The coins were struck at the San Francisco branch of the US Mint, and so have an "S" mintmark on the reverse just below the main engraving. They have a fineness of 0.900 or 21.6 carat.

These popular coins are referred to as "Coronet Liberty" eagles. They were designed by James B. Longacre, who was chief engraver of the US Mint between 1844 and 1869.

These double eagle coins contain just under 1 troy ounce of gold.

Photograph is of the only coin we currently have in stock of this type which is in grade good fine on the obverse and almost very fine on the reverse.

Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details. Contact us if you require a photograph prior to purchase.

Double Eagles

The USA is a relatively young country, and its first regular issue of gold coins started in 1795. Although most of them have an eagle as a major part of their design, for some reason the $10 piece acquired the name eagle, and the other sizes as double eagles, half eagles, and quarter eagles. The ten dollar gold pieces are therefore known as eagles or gold eagles.

Be careful not to confuse them with the modern gold bullion eagles issued since 1986 - both are called eagles!

Coronet Liberty Head

The first double eagles were designed by James B. Longacre between 1849-1861 and 1866-1907. US double eagles featuring the Coronet Liberty design were minted at the Denver (D mintmark), Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans (O mintmark) and San Francisco (S mintmark) branches of the US Mint.

Obverse

The obverse shows a coronet head of Liberty, facing left surrounded by 13 stars. The date is set below the neck of Liberty.

Reverse

The reverse shows a representation of the Great American Seal with a halo of 13 stars and a circumscription reading:

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
IN GOD WE TRUST
E PLURIBUS UNUM
TWENTY D.
