This 1874 British Sovereign was produced at the branch mint in Melbourne. The reverse depicts the shield design and the obverse depicts the young head portrait of Queen Victoria.
1874 shield sovereigns were issued by the London, and Melbourne Mints only. The London issue is quite rare, R4 according to Marsh, so the Melbourne issue is the only common mintmark for this date of shield sovereign. St. George and dragon reverse types exist for all three mints. Victoria Young Head sovereigns were produced from 1837 to 1887 inclusive. There are two reverse designs, the shield and St. George & Dragon. The former were minted throughout the young head portrait whereas the latter were created from 1871-1887.
The William Wyon portrait of Queen Victoria is depicted on the obverse of the coin showing the young head portrait. The date can be seen below the neck.
The shield design by Jean Baptiste Merlen is depicted on the reverse of the coin. The mint mark M is shown below the wreath.
