This 1873 Young Head British sovereign of Queen Victoria has a shield reverse design. The Sydney mint mark is located on the reverse of this 22 carat gold coin.

Victoria Young Head Sovereigns were issued for Queen Victoria in almost every year from 1838 to 1901. During this period, there were three main obverse (head) designs, and two reverse designs.

The Young Head with shield reverse was produced from 1837 to 1887 inclusive, with the St George reverse being produced from 1871-1887.

The 1873 shield sovereigns were produced at two mints; The Royal Mint in London and the Australian branch mints in Sydney. 1,478,000 sovereigns were issued for circulation by the Sydney mint, this figure combines the mintage figures for both the shield and the St George reverses.

Obverse

The obverse shows William Wyon's Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria. The engraver's initials W.W. are set in the narrow truncated neck. The coin features the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA

Reverse

The reverse shows Jean Baptiste Merlen's crown topped shield design.The Sydney mint mark S is placed above the floral emblem at the base of the coin.
