In 1872, there were two reverse designs; the shield reverse and the St George & Dragon reverse. In the same year, British sovereigns were struck at three different mints; London and the branch mints in Melbourne and Sydney in Australia.

This 1872 Sydney mint sovereign depicts the Benedetto Pistrucci's St George & Dragon design on the reverse.

A total of 1,815,000 sovereigns were issued for circulation in 1872, this figure combines the mintage for both the shield and the St George and Dragon sovereigns produced at the Sydney mint.

We sell over 5,000 dated and graded sovereigns. If you haven't seen the coin that you are looking for, contact our showroom on 01253 343081 and we will check availability for you.
