This 1871 Young Head Victoria sovereign was issued by the Sydney mint in Australia. Struck in 22 carat gold, this British circulation coin features the iconic crowned shield design by engraver, Jean Baptiste Merlen.

In 1871, two versions of the Victoria Young Head sovereign were issued. The shield reverse and the St George and Dragon reverse.

There are also two variations on the St George & Dragon reverse, one has a short tail and one has a long tail.

This 1871 shield reverse sovereign was produced by the Sydney branch mint in Australia. Mintage figures issued by the Sydney mint combine both the shield and St George and Dragon reverses. 2,814,000 British sovereigns were minted in Sydney in 1871.

Obverse

The obverse depicts the young head portrait of Queen Victoria, designed by William Wyon, Chief Engraver at The Royal Mint. This is the third Young Head portrait. The initials W.W. are in relief in the truncated neck. The inscription around the coin reads VICTORIA DEI GRATIA.

Reverse

The reverse shows the crowned shield design by engraver, Jean Baptiste Merlen. The S for Sydney branch mint is located below the wreath.
