In 1863, die numbers were introduced on the reverse of sovereigns, probably about half way through the year, as there were many 1863's also issued without die number. It is thought that this was was done to assist with production and quality control, and the practice continued on most London Mint sovereigns.

If you buy one of these coins you will recieve an 1863 shield sovereign either with a die number or without one. (Spink reference 3852D or 3853, Marsh 46 or 48).

If you would like to specify a type, you are looking for a particular die number or grade please contact us.

There were several main types of sovereign issued in 1863, see 'more info' for the main types. *If you have a rare "827" type for sale we would like to buy one*

Die Numbers on Gold Sovereigns

There were several main types of sovereign issued in 1863 listed by Spink these are:

1) WW incuse without die number. There is a rare subtype of these with a Roman I in the date.

2) WW incuse with number 827 in raised numerals on truncation of neck of the Queen. This type exsists both without die number on reverse and with die number 22.

3) WW incuse with die number.

The small quantity with obverse die number "827" are the only known sovereigns to have a die number on the obverse. They are very rare, luckily we have owned one before, if you have one you wish to sell please contact us. The number is found at the bottom of the bust (where the ww is in the main photo).

Obverse

The obverse depicts a young head portrait of Queen Victoria designed by William Wyon and the inscription:

VICTORIA DEI GRATIA 1863

The engraver's initials are in the truncation in incuse lettering (appearance of being punched in).

Reverse

The reverse bears the shield design. If it is there, then the die number can be seen below the wreath. The coin features the inscription:

BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID:DEF.
