Victoria Gothic Crown

The original Victoria gothic crown was issued in 1847 and 1853 (solely as a proof edition). Designed by William Wyon, the obverse featured a crowned bust of Queen Victoria on the obverse, with the quartered shields on the reverse.

MS-63 Grade

The Sheldon Grading Scale defines MS-63 graded coins as follows:

Slightly weak or average strike with moderate abrasions and hairlines of varying sizes.

The Royal Mint Great Engravers Series

The same portrait of Queen Victoria can be seen on previous releases of the Royal Mint's gothic portrait crown coins, which feature a modern interpretation of the design using contemporary techniques.

Obverse

The obverse features the crowned bust of Queen Victoria with braided hair. Floral emblems can be seen pictured on her dress. These floral designs are made up of roses, shamrocks and thistles.

It was designed by one of the greatest British coin engravers, William Wyon, who served as the former chief engraver of the Royal Mint.

The inscription reads as the following:

VICTORIA REGINA

1849

W.W.

Reverse

Crowned cruciform shields bearing three lions passant for England, lion rampant for Scotland, and harp for Ireland. In the angles are roses, a shamrock and a thistle. In the centre there is a double rose. All contained within a deeply tressured circular panel.

The reverse design was engraved by William Wyon.

The reverse legend reads:

ONE FLORIN ONE TENTH OF A POUND
