The 1831 gold proof half sovereign features the second bust of king William IV with a reverse of the crowned shield.
The 1831 gold proof plain edged half sovereign was the first proof half soverieign issued during the reign of King William IV. It was part of a plain edged proof set struck for the coronation. This set included the half, full and double sovereign.
Previous half sovereigns had been easily confused with sixpences as they were similar in size. In an attempt to remedy this the half sovereign of 1831 was made slightly smaller (although the weight was kept the same). However, the public rejected this smaller coin and it had to be returned to its original size for the 1835 issue.
There is also a very rare proof version of this coin with a milled edge. Examples of the milled edge coin could sell for approximately £13,500.
