The First Modern Gold Sovereign in Proof-like Condition.
This coin was last sold at auction on the 7th June 2018 by Baldwins, who described it as '1817, laur. head r., rev. St. George and the dragon (S.3785), appears to be struck from proof dies, about mint state, rare'.
It was estimated to sell at between 3000-4000 GBP. The final hammer price was £3200. Including the 24% buyers premium, this would be £3968.
Spink reference number 3785.
The obverse of the 1817 proof like full sovereign features the Laureate Head of King George III.
The garter inscription on the St. George and the Dragon reverse reads:
Honi soit qui mal y pense
French for "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it". This is the motto of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the UK.
