1804 "No Stops Between CHK" Sterling Trade Dollar

This is one of the slightly rarer types of 1804 trade dollars having no stops inbetween CHK on truncation. This type is listed in spink under reference 3768 along with the other types of 1804 trade dollars.

They were minted at the Soho mint in Birmingham and were techinally tokens. They were minted over the top of American Spanish reales and some of the previous 'host' coin can be seen underneath. This was done as there was a severe shortage of silver for silver coinage. The situation was desperate and this saved a lot of times and got some silver into the general circulation.

There is a beehive in the background to left. The inner garter reads 'FIVE SHILLINGS DOLLAR.' Over this rests five circular stone turrets. Engraver's initial appears in the triangular space between the sheld, cornucopia, and Britannia's dress.
