This is one of the rarer types of 1804 "No Stops Between CHK" Sterling Trade Dollar, having no stops inbetween the CHK on truncation. This type is listed in spink under reference 3768 along with the other types of 1804 trade dollars.

The coins were struck by the Soho Mnit, Birmingham between 1804 and 1811, though they all bear the 1804 date and were technically tokens, issued as an emergency measure to deal with a severe shortage of silver coinage and the need to get silver into general circulation. They were also a way to get around the legal technicalities of breaking the Royal Mint's monopoly on issuing legal tender precious metal coins.

They were initially valued at 5 shillings but were subsequently re-valued at 5 shillings and 6 pence in 1811.

Designed by Conrad Heinrich Kucher, these emergency countermarked coins, were actually struck from the Bank of England's release of its Spanish dollars.

These dollars sometimes show signs of the host coin as they were re-stuck from Spanish- American 8 Reales.

Obverse

Laureate portrait of George III engraved by C H Kuchler. CHK with no stops shown on the shoulder of King George towards the bottom left of the bust.

Reverse

Seated Britannia holding an olive branch and spear. She rests on a circular shield bearing the Union flag, under this there is a cornucopia, a symbol of plenty. There is a beehive in the background to left. The inner garter reads 'FIVE SHILLINGS DOLLAR.' Over this rests five circular stone turrets. Engraver's initial appears in the triangular space between the sheld, cornucopia, and Britannia's dress.
