This is a 1689 William and Mary half crown depicting the first reverse design.

The coin you receive may be different to the picture shown.

William and Mary were first cousins and married in 1677, when William was 27 and Mary was just 15. Mary's father, King James II, had converted to Catholicism. When his wife gave birth to a son, it meant Mary was no longer next in line for the throne and Protestants feared a Catholic King.

Protestant supporters encouraged William to invade England causing James II to exile to France. Mary and William were offered the role as joint monarchs by the English Parliament in 1689. They ruled side by side until Mary's death from smallpox in 1694.

Other variations of this crown are

  • FRA for FR
  • Caul only frosted, pearls
  • No frosting, pearls

The variation will be shown in the drop down box "style".
