James II sixpence with overdate 1687/6. This hammered silver sixpence is the early type shield with the indented top.

James II was the last Stuart king and possibly the most controversial monarch in British history. His reign lasted just three years, 1685-88. As a Catholic ruler of a staunchly Protestant nation, his religious beliefs and policies led to his abdication and subsequent exile in France. He was replaced by his daughter, Mary and her husband, William of Orange.

Obverse

The obverse features left facing James II laureate and draped bust by James Roettier. The coin features the Latin legend IACOBVS · II · DEI · GRATIA (James the Second by the Grace of God) with a toothed border.

Reverse

The reverse bears four crowned cruciform shields with the garter star at centre and date split either side of top crown. The reverse Latin legend MAG BR · FRA ET · HIB REX translates to King of Great Britain, France and Ireland. The date shows a 6 underneath the 7.
