This 1676 Charles II crown features the V. OCTAVO along the coin edge. Struck in sterling silver, these coins has been graded by our expert numismatists.

Although The Royal Mint had tentatively played with the idea of issuing milled coinage instead of hammered coins, it was not until 1663 that the machinery of Pierre Blondeau finally replaced the ancient hand hammering process. The dies were engraved with an edge inscription to make it harder for the coins to be forged.

The edge of this 1676 silver crown features the legend DECVS ET TVTAMEN ANNO REGNI VICESIMO OCTAVO.

Obverse

The obverse shows the third portrait of Charles II, draped laureate head. The legend reads CAROLVS II DEI GRATIA which translates to Charles II by the Grace of God.

Reverse

The reverse design is the royal coat of arms; crowned emblematic shields with interlinked Cs in angles and garter star in the centre. The coin bears the legend reads MAG BR FR ET HIB REX which is Latin for King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, with the date split 16 76.
