The Isle of Man 1974 Gold Sovereign Elizabeth II Bullion Coin was minted by the Pobjoy Mint and features the second obverse portrait of Elizabeth II, along with a depiction of a Norse warrior on horseback.
Arnold Machin (1911-1999), a notable British sculptor, is renowned for designing the second royal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on UK coins and stamps. The portrait was featured on United Kingdom decimal coins from 1968 to 1984.
In the era known as the Viking Age, from the late 8th to the early 11th centuries, the Isle of Man became a notable focal point for Norse Vikings. This encompassed warriors, settlers, and traders who used the island strategically for their seafaring endeavors. Their connections to trade routes and exploits across the Irish Sea and beyond left an enduring mark on the Isle of Man's culture, and history.
The obverse features the Arnold Machin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The reverse shows a Norse warrior on horseback, making this very similar in appearance to the St. George and dragon reverse which is so familiar on British sovereigns.
