When Was the First 50p Coin Issued?

The first 50p coin was issued in the United Kingdom in 1969, replacing the ten-shilling note during the decimalisation process. The reverse design showcased the new pence depiction of Britannia, a design that is also featured in the 2019 Gold Proof Piedfort '50 Years of the 50p' British Culture 5-Coin Sets.

Why Is the Set Called British Culture?

This set celebrates British culture by featuring coins that commemorate the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, organizations dedicated to equipping the youth of the United Kingdom with essential life skills. Additionally, the set includes the inaugural 50p design, 'Britannia New Pence', which showcases Lady Britannia, a representation of the United Kingdom.

The set also highlights the Kew Gardens 50p design, one of the rarest and most sought-after designs, which pays tribute to the Royal Botanic Gardens situated in London, England. Furthermore, the collection contains a coin honouring Roger Bannister, the UK long-distance runner who made history by being the first person to run a mile in under four minutes during the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.
