150 Years of the Australia Sovereign

The 2005 Sovereign Sydney mint coin is a special edition that faithfully recreates the famous design of Leonard Charles Wyon's 1855 Sydney mint Sovereign. This beautiful coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first sovereign ever minted at the Sydney mint, representing an important milestone in the history of coins.

Legacy of Leonard Charles Wyon

Leonard Charles Wyon, the eldest son of esteemed chief engraver William Wyon, hails from a lineage of remarkable engravers. Building upon his family's rich legacy, Leonard Charles Wyon by designed the first reverse design of Sydney mint Australian sovereigns and many more coins.

Sydney Mint

Since 1855, gold sovereigns were struck at overseas branch mints, in addition to The Royal Mint in London. The first branch mint to strike sovereigns was Sydney, Australia in 1855. If you are interested in the Sydney mintmarks you can discover more in our blog Mints and Mint Marks.

Obverse

The obverse side proudly presents the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, engraved by Ian Rank-Broadley. Her Majesty faces right, adorned with the renowned Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
