“Today I received my fourth order from Chards - with my third 'best value' Victoria sovereign. With some careful timing I've managed to acquire an 1872 young head sovereign, 1890 jubilee head sovereign and, in this order an 1896 old head sovereign; all through the 'best value' option - paying just a 7% premium for each coin (around £22 more than a new sovereign). These are sold as bullion coins, so there are some minor scratches and dings, but for me that adds to the character and history of these coins (Chards sell graded historic sovereigns if you want them) It's really interesting thinking about the history of these coins - who owned them; did they sit in a merchant's pocket, were they paid to workers, did a family buy one for the birth of their child, was it a wedding gift... of course it's impossible to know, but fascinating to wonder. Maybe someone lost it 'down the back of the sofa' once! My Victorian sovereign set now complete - a coin for each of the three portraits of Queen Victoria... unless Chards want to sell me a young head shield sovereign at 'best value' price ;) ”
