1866 Gold Sovereign Victoria Young Head Shield | L

The 1866 gold sovereign displays the young head portrait of Queen Victoria by William Wyon on the obverse. The reverse of the coin features the shield design by Jean Baptiste Merlen.

There is only one main type listed for the 1866 London sovereign under Spink reference number 3853 or Marsh reference 51.

If you are after a particular grade or have other specific requests please call or email us as we are likely to have many in stock that are not advertised on the website.

There was also a sovereign issued in the branch mint of Australia Sydney in this year with the 'AUTRALIA' reverse. These are much rarer than the shield reverse London type.

Obverse

The obverse depicts a young head portrait of Queen Victoria designed by William Wyon and the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA with the year date. The engraver's initials are in the truncation 'WW' and are incuse.

Reverse

The reverse bears the shield design. The die number can be seen below the wreath. The coin features the inscription BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID:DEF.

Cancellations & Returns:
Once you place an order, you cannot cancel it. We do not currently accept returns, however. You may be able to sell your investment products back to Chards at the current buy back rate.
