The 1864 gold sovereign features a Victoria Young Head with a shield reverse. The portrait of Queen Victoria is the second large head. The die numbers shown are for illustrative purposes only but each coin supplied will have a die number below the wreath. Contact us if you are looking for a specific die number.

The 1864 gold sovereign coin was struck with a number of different die numbers. The die number is situated on the reverse of the sovereign, towards the bottom of the shield, above the rose, shamrock and thistle.

Struck in 22 carat gold, this British coin was originally issued as a circulation coin with a nominal value of one pound (twenty shillings).

Obverse

The obverse of the sovereign shows the young portrait design of Victoria. This is the second (large) head variety. The initials, WW, for the engraver William Wyon are incuse without stops in the truncated neck.

The obverse bears a short inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA and the year date, 1864.

Reverse

The reverse of the sovereign shows Jean Baptiste Merlen's shield design. The die number is located above the rose at the bottom of the coin.
