The Tower of London Prison

The Tower of London prison operated for over 800 years and is known for the acts of execution and torture that were performed there. The prison opened in 1101, with the last prisoner being executed by firing squad in 1941.

Famous occupants included Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife; Elizabeth I, who was imprisoned by her half-sister; and Guy Fawkes, who suffered a very grisly ending.

Although the prison has many gruesome stories associated with it, most are urban legends. Whilst torture was used, it was primarily a way to extract information from criminals. Occasionally the threat of torture would be enough to persuade the prisoner into confessing.

Obverse

The obverse features the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by Jody Clark

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Timothy Noad. It shows a Norman arched window with the text "MY LIBERTIE DENIED" which was a piece of graffiti a prisoner had carved into one of the stones, hundreds of years ago. The font used was based on a Tudor period inscription in the tower.
