Sir Winston Churchill

Sir Winston Churchill is often described as the "greatest living Englishman". A man of many talents, he is known for being a soldier, politician, writer and an artist. He served as Prime Minister twice. His first term of office was from 1940 until 1945. He saw Britain through the Second World War, his words of courage helping the nation through the difficult time. His second term of office was from 1951-1955.

When Sir Winston Churchill died in 1965, a commemorative crown was issued in his honour. This was the first time a 'commoner' was portrayed on a British coin as opposed to a member of the Royal Family.

British sculptor, Mark Richards, was commissioned to design the portrait for this 2015 Churchill crown. He was also responsible for the portrait of Prince Philip on the 2011 90th birthday crown and the reverse engraving for the 2014 300th Anniversary of the Death of Queen Anne crown.

Whilst the five pound is British legal tender, it does not enter circulation and is not accepted by banks and shops as payment.

This five pound coin is a popular choice for coin collectors. If you are interested in numismatics and collecting coins, you may be interested in reading our blogs:
