Edge

"STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS"

The edge is milled and also carries an incuse inscription.

The edge inscription encapsulates perfectly the essence of the reverse design, and has been taken from a letter written by Isaac Newton to fellow scientist Robert Hooke, where he very modestly claimed that his success had been built on the achievement of other: "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants".The silver proof bimetallic two pound coins are often subject to light toning. The coin can appear 'cloudy', this is light toning which can develop into iridescent colouring which we find very attractive.

This piedfort coin is the same diameter as the circulation coin and is double the thickness and is struck to a proof finish. It contains twice the amount of silver as the silver proof coin. This coin comes in a presentation box with certificate.

This coin features the edge inscription:

"RUGBY WORLD CUP 1999"

Obverse

The obverse (head side) is the fourth major portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank Broadley, FRBS, FSNAD, whose initials IRB appear under the head.

Reverse

Design depicts a stadium, on which is superimposed a rugby ball and goalpost. The date '1999' above separated by goal-posts from the value 'TWO POUNDS' below designed by Ron Dutton.

The engraving was designed by medallist, Ron Dutton. The design epitomises a stadium, the distinctively shaped rugby ball and posts.
