The 1902 Edward VII Coronation Proof Coin Set
This original proof set was issued to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII.
This is a superb example of the proof coin set which is a favourite choice for the serious coin collector.
For the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, the Royal Mint issued two different proof coin sets, the thirteen coin set featured on this page, and also an eleven coin set, similar to this one, but without the two pound gold coin (a double sovereign) and five pound gold piece.
For some reason, the Mint decided to issue this set with an all matt finish rather than the more normal highly polished proof finish. The complete set is presented in its original red leather box. For collectors of modern proof sets, please note that in those far off ancient days, the Mint were not in the habit of issuing any certificate with their proof sets, but then in those days there was far less marketing of coin sets, and the issue price would have been little more than the face value, which was £2.1.10, two pounds one shilling and ten pence, the equivalent of £2.09 in its modern decimal equivalent. With the leather box, the total cost may have been around £2.25 to £2.50 in total.
For the patient collector, many of the coin sets we offer represent incredible bargains, as they are considerably below the original issue price.
Since 1979, the British Royal Mint has issued proof sovereigns, and from 1980 also issued 4 coin sets containing a Five Pound, Two Pound (double sovereign), and half sovereign. In some years, there was only a three-coin set issued.
In 1970, the Royal Mint started regularly producing and marketing proof and other coin sets for collectors. Before 1970, most proof coin sets were issued only for special occasions such as coronations.
Each coin bears the Edward VII portrait by George William De Saulles on the obverse.
