The obverse features the fifth definitive UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. His initials are below the truncated neck. The coin bears the inscription ELIZABETH II·D·G·REG·500 POUNDS·2016·
The reverse was designed by the painter and sculptor, Christopher Hobbs. His mosaics have appeared in Westminster Cathedral. The design was inspired by the rose of England and The Queen's love of flowers. It shows nine roses, one for each decade of her life.
