The 2016 Australian Kookaburras from the Perth Mint were released on 2nd November, 2015. This is an investment product.
The coins are struck in 99.9% fine silver and are Australian legal tender. The one ounce coin will have a mintage figure of 500,000, whilst the other sizes will be made on a "mint-to-order" basis. As always, each coin comes in its own protective plastic capsule. The laughing kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher species and is synonymous with the Australian outback. Kookaburras are carnivores and eat young birds, insects, reptiles, snakes and mice. Although they are native to Australia, they can also be found in New Guinea and the Aru Islands. Since being introduced in 1990, the Kookaburra coin has proven to be popular. The 300,000 coins that were issued in the first year even sold out within the very first day!
The obverse has Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The reverse of the 2016 coin features a kookaburra on top of a fence post. The Australian outback can be seen in the background. It has the Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark on the left hand side.
