More Info

The Edward VII sovereign was produced by five branch mints in 1910. These were the Ottawa mint in Canada, the Royal Mint in London and the three Australian branch mints; Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. As sovereigns remained in circulation as pound coins until the first world war, most Edward sovereigns are quite worn. Many people put aside a few shiny new coins from the first year of a reign, but not as many of the following years get saved. This often makes the subsequent years of a reign more difficult to find in top grade. The Melbourne branch mint in Australia produced two variations of this 22 carat gold coin; the circulated sovereign and the proof sovereign. The 1910 Edward VII Melbourne mint proof sovereign is very rare.

Obverse

The obverse design is the right facing bust of Edward VII by Royal Mint engraver, George William De Saulles. The legend on the obverse reads EDWARDVS VII D:G:BRITT:OMN:REX:F:D:IND:IMP:

Reverse

The reverse of the 1910 sovereign is easy to distinguish, as the toothed border is narrower than earlier Edward VII sovereigns. The design on the coin is the well known engraving of St George attacking a dragon which was created by Benedetto Pistrucci. The mintmark, M, for Melbourne is located in the ground below the wounded dragon.
