More Info

In 1904, The Royal Mint in London, and the Australian mints in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, all issued sovereigns. Mintmarks for the Australian branch mints are located in the ground below the dragon. This line is also called the exergue. The Melbourne mint produced the sovereign in two finishes; uncirculated and proof. The proof coin is extremely rare.

Obverse

George William De Saulles' effigy of Edward VII faces right on the obverse of this 22 carat gold coin. The initials DeS. appear below the truncation and the legend around the coin reads EDWARDVS VII D:G:BRITT:OMN:REX:F:D:IND:IMP:

Reverse

Benedetto Pistrucci designed the St George and the dragon engraving for the reverse of the 1904 Edward VII sovereign. This design has featured on sovereigns and other coins since 1817 and is still used on modern sovereigns today. St George is attacking a dragon with his sword whilst mounted on a horse. The M mintmark is embedded in the exergue line and the year, 1904, and the Italian engraver's initials B.P. are in the field below.
