The Perth Mint began their lunar series in 1996. This coin is part of the second series of lunar coins. The Year of the Rooster starts on 28th January, 2017. This will be the Chinese year 4715. The rooster is the 10th of 12 animals in the Chinese lunar calendar. Those born during the Year of the Rooster are said to be hardworking, observant, confident and honest.

The Perth Mint released the lunar coins on 8th September, 2016, we received the coins on 20th September.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the same portrait as used on previous dates in the series. The denomination ($50), size and fineness are also displayed.
The reverse of the coin features a rooster. The Perth Mint 'P' mint mark and the Chinese character for 'Year of the Rooster' are also shown.
