The First Modern Sovereign

Hammered gold coins called 'Sovereigns' had been minted on and off between 1489-1604, whereupon James I (VI) changed the name of the 20/- gold piece to a 'Unite'. The reform coinage Sovereign of 1817 onwards was issued as a normal circulation type coin, and also as a proof.

Obverse

The obverse bears the George III laureate head on the obverse. This portrait was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, who also designed the St George reverse.

Reverse

The reverse features St George, slaying the dragon. It was designed by the artist, Benedetto Pistrucci. This iconic design has appeared on almost all sovereigns, with a few exceptions. The reverse features the inscription that reads as:

"Honi Soit Qui Mal y Pense"
