Coin Specification

In 1880, the Victoria Young Head shield sovereigns were minted by the branch mints of the Royal Mint in Melbourne and Sydney. 1,459,000 British sovereigns were issued for circulation by the Sydney mint.

Sovereigns with the St George and the Dragon reverse were also issued in 1880.

The obverse shows the Young Head bust of Queen Victoria designed by Chief Engraver, William Wyon. His initials, W.W. are in relief in the truncated neck above the date. The coin bears the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA

The reverse bears the crowned shield by Jean Baptiste Merlen. The mint mark, S, is set below the ribbon bow. This shows that the sovereign was minted in Sydney.
