Edward VII was 59 years old when he finally became King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India. The eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had been the heir to the throne for longer than any of his predecessors. Although he was well liked for his affability and his peace making negotiations, his reputation for adultery, gambling and self-indulgence marred his reign.

Due to his short reign, Edward VII coins, issued between 1902 - 1910 are highly popular among collectors.

The 1902 Edward VII sovereign was issued by the Perth mint as a circulated coin with a value of one pound. In 1902, British sovereigns were also issued in London, Sydney and Melbourne.
