The 2024 St George and the Dragon 1 oz Silver Coin is the first release in the Royal Mint's new bullion coin series, celebrating the legendary tale of St George and the Dragon.
Over two centuries after St George first appeared on the modern sovereign, British engraver Jody Clark presents a modern, dynamic interpretation which captures the heroic soldier and his noble steed in great detail as they battle the evil dragon.

Chards is an official partner of The Royal Mint. Our 2024 St George and the dragon coin range, among other Royal Mint products, are sourced directly from their mint headquarters in Llantrisant, Wales.
The coins include micro-detail background waves and a micro-text border that serve as security features, similar to those seen on other Royal Mint bullion coinage, such as gold Britannia coins.
St George made his first appearance on British coins in 1817 after the government commissioned the 1816 British Coinage Act. Italian sculptor, Benedetto Pistrucci, was commissioned to create a series of engravings for the new coins.
The first modern sovereign was introduced in 1817, and featured Benedetto Pistrucci’s depiction of St George slaying a dragon. This beautiful design remains on our gold sovereigns today, over two hundred years later. It is one of the worlds most widely recognised coins.
The Royal Mint also released a selection of 2024 St George and the dragon proof coins featuring a modern interpretation of Pistrucci's 1817 sovereign design for their Great Engravers series, celebrating British coinage.
St George is a famous Christian saint known for the legend of slaying a dragon to save a princess and her town, showing triumph of good over evil. Born in Cappadocia (now Turkey), he was a Roman soldier who stood up against the persecution of Christians, leading to his death around AD 303.
In the 14th century, he became the patron saint of England. His symbol, a red cross on a white background, is part of the Union Jack and stands for bravery and chivalry.
Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a form of levies imposed on the profit garnered from the sale of assets, such as real estate, investments, and collectibles. In the United Kingdom, the present CGT allowance is £3,000 per annum per individual, which implies that one can earn up to £3,000 from the sale of assets prior to being subject to CGT.
The obverse of the coin features the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
This coin bears a legend on the obverse.
CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 2 POUNDS ·
The reverse features a modern interpretation of St George and the Dragon, designed by Jody Clark.
St George's appearance in the design reflects that of a Roman soldier, wearing a galea (helmet) and a sagum (cloak), both essential pieces for a Roman soldier going into battle. He is depicted sitting on his horse, which is rearing towards the dragon. George's lance is positioned and ready to thrust into the dragon, which is laid on the ground in a vulnerable position.
