White Greyhound of Richmond

Greyhounds have featured prominently in the history of the British royal family. In the 14th century John of Gaunt, the 1st Duke of Lancaster, chose the animal to appear on his badge. Henry VII used a greyhound as one of his supporters; the heraldic beast which appears on either side of his Royal Arms. The greyhound is meant to stand for honour.

The shield of Richmond consists of a crowned Tudor Rose with a green and white background.

Privy Council

We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.

The Queen's Beasts

The Queen's Beasts are a series of ten statues that were created for Elizabeth II's coronation at Westmnister Abbey in 1953. They combine heraldic elements and mythical creatures which form a part of the Queen's royal ancestry. The Royal Mint launched their Queen's Beasts bullion range in 2016.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin shows the Jody Clark coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

ELIZABETH II·D·G·REG·F·D·5 POUNDS·

Reverse

Like the rest of the coins in the series, the reverse was designed by Jody Clark. It features a greyhound with the heraldic badge of Richmond. The inscription reads:-

“· WHITE GREYHOUND OF RICHMOND ·”

The badge of Richmond consists of a crowned Tudor Rose.

The initials of the engraver Jody Clark appear on the bottom left below the shield.
